Living Room Built In Bookshelf Build
This is the build of a built-in bookshelf that I built to replace a guard railing for the stairwell behind it. You can see the original 1970's railing and the plastic lattice I put up temporarily so kids would not fit through the railing and fall.
The main body is made from maple plywood. The panels are made from MDF and soft maple. The top and the shelves are made of oak.
As you can see, some of the parts of this project were rather large. Not only did I have to install it in pieces, working with it in the shop was a challenge as well. The top is about nine feet long. I had to have a helper when running it through the planer.
I pained this project using General Finishes primer and milk paint. I like how it came out. However, if I did something similar, I would find a way to spray it in the shop first.
You can see where I filled some of the knot holes in the oak with tinted epoxy and then mill them down. I've done this for a few projects and like how it turns out. It is easier and stronger than wood filler.
Some of the pictures show mock-ups, so it may look like the joints are not tight. I'd never let that happen with the final glue-up.
